Our sustainability mission

At sykell, we are making reusable packaging the new normal, with the aim of remaining in harmony with nature and people. We are fighting plastic pollution by revolutionising reusable packaging and incorporating the existing deposit system to close the loop. Because what stays in circulation does not pollute nature. sykell's business model is sustainable at its core, which means that our responsibility for sustainability extends to all our activities. But that's not all: for us, sustainability is not just a buzzword. With our holistic sustainability management, we want to fulfil high ecological and social standards as well as our overall corporate responsibility. We see sustainability as a transformative process and do not aim to be perfect, but we are working to establish high sustainability and transparency standards.

Our sustainability management is designed to be holistic from the ground up. We know that real change is only possible if we consider both environmental and social factors equally. That is why we are committed to organising our entire value chain - from procurement to disposal - within an ethical and sustainable framework.

Our engagement along our supply chain

As sykell develops and grows, so does our commitment to sustainability. We conduct annual surveys with existing partners to determine our social and environmental footprint. We are establishing regular supplier surveys on social and environmental topics to discover, evaluate and transparently communicate the deeper supply chain because for us the supply chain does not end with direct suppliers. New partners and suppliers are selected according to defined sustainability criteria in order to guarantee that all partners are in line with our sustainability standards. Here you can find our Code of Conduct, which our partners and employees follow: Code of Conduct.

It is important to us to keep transport distances short and to establish a socially and ecologically compatible value chain, which is why all of our direct partners, such as producers, warehouses and washing facilities, are located in Germany. In order to improve in this context in the future, we are planning to work with more washing facilities, to reduce transport distances.

Our guiding environmental commitments, principles and objectives can be found in our Environmental Policy. We are also committed to the social part of sustainability and wrote down the commitment to social values in our Social Policy.  We aim to meet our responsibility towards our employees, consumers and workers in the supply chain.

Our system facilitates a shift towards sustainable consumer behaviour by offering a convenient solution to reduce single-use packaging waste. We prioritize educating consumers on sustainable practices, and empowering them to make eco-friendly choices. Through our convenient reuse system, with common return points like RVMs, consumers seamlessly adopt environmentally conscious habits. This educational approach fosters long-term responsible behaviour change, promoting a culture of reuse and responsible consumption. Our efforts extend to fostering greater participation in sustainability initiatives across FMCG sectors and cultivating a sense of collective environmental stewardship. Additionally, by reducing packaging waste, we contribute to cleaner communities, less litter, and enhanced aesthetics of public spaces, ultimately improving residents' well-being.

Our Circulation System

We close the cycle of our containers. We endeavour to avoid wasting resources and materials at every stage of the life cycle. When developing our containers, it was important for us to also consider the last steps in the life cycle. What happens when they break? Our containers are made of 100% PP (polypropylene). PP is the plastic that can be recycled best. This guarantees that the material used has a next life. We collect all our containers that have reached the end of their life due to shortage, these are all collected centrally.

Consequently, we take care of a standardised recycling process with our recycling partner to produce PP granulate from our products. Our system for circulation is designed in a way to be as convenient as possible for consumers. Since our aim is to maximise the reuse of every reusable packaging, we work on setting up all parameters to increase the fast return of the packaging. With the consumer and efficient operations in the background, our system was developed.

To better understand our operations have a look behind the scenes of EINFACH MERHWEG: https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=eMTJoGp_AG4. The circulation system for reuse set up for EINFACH MEHRWEG is offered to other operators of reusable assets by using our Circular ERP.

SDG Alliance

We have conducted a materiality analysis based on the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in order to identify the most important sustainability issues for us as a company. The analysis is based on sykell's actual and potential impact on the SDGs as well as the importance and relevance of the SDGs for all stakeholders.

We have identified four SDGs on which we have focussed and are having a positive impact:

SDG 9 - Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production
SDG 13 - Climate Action
SDG 17 - Partnerships for the Goals

Ecological Assessment

Over the course of the last months, we worked on determining the ecological impact of sykell and our EINFACH MEHRWEG products. We have conducted a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) in accordance with the ISO 14040 Standard for our seven EINFACH MEHRWEG products, alongside an evaluation of our carbon footprint. Our main objectives have been to meet the impact reporting requirements outlined by our Article 9 investors CGV, to understand and improve our ecological impacts and to compile a comprehensive impact report for the year 2023.

Company Carbon Footprint 2023

For our carbon footprint, we identified and quantified all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with our activities, according to the GHG Protocol, across Scope 1 (direct emissions), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased energy), and Scope 3 (indirect emissions from upstream and downstream activities). The GHG Baseline derived from this assessment will serve as the foundation for our future reduction strategies and targets. The carbon footprint was calculated internally according to the GHG Protocol using the "Carbon Footprint Tool" from the Footprint Firm ApS.

In the following years, we aim to reduce our carbon footprint focusing on our scope 3 emissions. The main measures we plan to implement are the following:

• Reducing scope 2 emissions hinges on limiting electricity use in offices, optimizing heating and working with the shared office manager to switch to renewable energy
• Using renewable energies in washing and production facilities.Increase the number of washing facilities to reduce transportation distances
• Working with logistic partners who operate with a fleet of electric vehicles
• The development of science-based reduction targets, to create a realistic plan to climate-neutrality
• Stop using single-use packaging along the sykell value chain
• Creating a stronger focus on the CIRCULAR ERP service which is our low emissions operations
• Reducing the need for production by focusing on reuse.

Life Cycle Assessment of EINFACH MEHRWEG

For 2023 we conducted our first Life Cycle Assessement for our EINFACH MEHRWEG product. For the comparative LCA we have analyzed the environmental impacts across all stages of the product life cycle, including GHG emissions, water consumption, and waste generation. We examined different single-use packaging alternatives utilized in the same use case than EINFACH MEHRWEG, comparing their environmental performance when reused 50 times or when 50 individual packages are utilized. The assessment is undergoing third-party verification, we anticipate the final results to be available in April.

The study covers the entire product life cycle from cradle to grave:

• Raw materials and manufacturingPre-washing
• Distribution to retail
• Use phase (reverse logistics and washing)
• End of life

Our comparative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) from 2023 can be found here. The LCA has been critically reviewed and certified by Bureau Veritas, the certificate can be found here.
We plan to publish our first Impact Report in summer 2024, which will comprehensively outline both the social and ecological impacts of sykell.
